If you were a $50,000 roach, would you live in a sewer?

You won't find any $50,000 roaches in Pima County's sewers. Or so the county claims. The county has received at least 20 calls from roach wranglers asking for permission to troll the underground maze of muck.

The callers hope to hunt down bar-coded roaches. And not to kill them.

One of 100 marked roaches a local pest company will release into the community is worth 50 grand if captured and returned.

Although the contest cucarachas came form the sewers, that's the one place they can't be released, according to the county.

"Don't mess with our manholes" Wastewater Management warned in a press release yesterday. "The marked roaches don't be in there, and neither should you."

Wading through raw sewage is hazardous, and a misdemeanor too.

The sponsor of the contest agrees that descending into the sewers is dangerous.

"I'm re-releasing roaches caught in the sewers" said Bruce Tennenbaum, owner of Arizona Pest Control, 1127 N. Rook Ave. "(But) it's not safe for people to be in he sewer system".

Tennenbaum said he will release 100 roaches at 100 spots around town Wednesday.

Anyone who finds a bar-coded roach receives $100 and has a chance to win the $50,000 grand prize. A single, winning bar code- which can be read only at Tennenbaum's store - will be announced June 29 before the Sidewinders baseball game at Tucson Electric Park.

Finder of right cockroach will be $50,000 richer.
