| Pack Rats are Pesky Critters! |
 |
Â
Living in Arizona, we come across some pretty interesting animals. One such animal is the Pack Rat. This little rodent is notorious for making a mess at the bottom of prickly pear cacti. Surprisingly, that mess is actually the creatures nest. It gathers what it finds, anywhere from trash to twigs, and makes a nest out of it. There are two reasons for that, one is so during the summer the Pack Rat stays cool and two so during the winter the nest keeps in warmth. These rodents aren’t a small species either. They can grow up to 15 inches long and weigh about 8 ounces. Pack Rats are great diggers and climbers. They mainly feed on cacti and mesquite beans, but they will eat anything. One interesting thing about them though is that they don’t need a water source to live because they obtain moisture from what they eat. Pack Rats live about 2 years and can have about 2-3 offspring every 45-60 days. Despite these rodents just having a messy nest they cause other problems too. Their nests can house blood sucking kissing bugs, fleas, lice, brown spiders, scorpions, and mice. They damage and destroy landscaping. One big problem is that they get into cars and use the engine compartments as nests. This leads to the destruction of wires and other components in your car causing costly damage. In order to prevent these rodents from damaging your property in anyway take a look at these tips:
- Keep bushes, trees, and other plants trimmed so you can see the base of the plant
- Ground covers should be kept low to the ground
- Thin out dense cactus
- Don’t allow a bunch of trees, plants and cacti to grow in tight groups
- Enclosed areas-make sure storage room doors, bird eaves, ventilation screens and exhaust fan covers fit tight and are attached well in enclosed areas, since a pack rat can fit through half-inch holes
- Keep carport, garages, and patio areas free of stored items to eliminate hiding places
- If there have been Pack Rats in your car engine compartment, have that area steam cleaned to eliminate the odor and leave your hood open at night with a yellow light focused on that area to help eliminate them
- Store fire wood at least a foot off the ground and two feet away from a wall
If you have a Pack Rat problem please call 520-886-7378 for an estimate to get rid of them.
