With precipitation come mosquitoes, and with mosquitoes the threat of West Nile virus. The city of Tucson and Pima County offer some tips to help you avoid becoming a mosquito buffet. Prevention starts at home. Eliminate reservoirs of standing water, which mosquitoes use to reproduce. Check unlikely places and devices that might allow water to pool, including spare tires, toys, wheelbarrows and saucers under potted plants. If you see standing water, you can report it to a West Nile virus hot line at 243-7999. To report neglected properties or stacks of garbage that could conceal mosquito spawning grounds, call 792-2489. Also, double-check windows and screens to ensure there are no gaps. When you’re out and about, slather yourself with mosquito repellent, especially after dusk and before dawn. The most effective of these include DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, Picaridin or IR3535.
