Pest Bird: Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura)

The Mourning Dove received its name due to its sad sounding call. Mourning Doves feed primarily on seeds and grains of several varieties and several weeds. The Mourning Dove is dependent upon water in that an individual most drinks water daily, unlike some other bird species.

The Mourning Dove is an easily recognizable bird. It has a distinctive long pointed tail, black spotting on coverts and pale gray/brown colored body feathers. This interesting bird can be found in both urban and rural areas across the southeast.
